DEFENDER (1981)

by Jayde SheLion on Nov 28, 2025
DEFENDER (1981)

In '81, Williams Defender wasn’t a run-of-the-mill arcade cabinet — it was a thrilling and anticipated one which stood amongst other top tier arcade games, like PAC-MAN. Amidst walls of glowing screens and buzzing cabinets there was a new kind of chaos: blips, explosions, and that distinct crackling of ship engines racing above an alien landscape. For so many of us who stood in front of that machine for the first time, Defender wasn’t just another quarter-muncher — it was an omen. Arcade games, video games – were evolving.

Eugene Jarvis and his team at Williams Electronics were responsible for the innovative games design, and Defender was unlike anything before it. Instead of a single static screen, the world scrolled endlessly in both directions. Enemies swooped in fast and without mercy. A tiny radar at the top of the screen showed threats you couldn’t even see yet — a small but revolutionary feature that kept your pulse racing. It wasn’t just about shooting aliens; it was about multitasking, rescuing stranded astronauts, and somehow keeping your ship in one piece amid the chaos.

If you were there back then, you probably remember that sense of awe — and frustration. The controls were notoriously complex: five buttons and a joystick that demanded total coordination. It was tough, it was fast, and it didn’t care about your excuses. But that’s exactly what made it special. Every time you got a little farther, every time you saved one more human, it meant something.

For many, Defender evolved into a rite of passage — the moment you graduated from casual player to true arcade warrior. It was skill, not luck, that got you to the next wave. And that kind of challenge gave the game an almost legendary aura. You didn’t just play Defender — you trained for it.

Today, firing up Defender on the Polycade Sente feels like time travel with a fresh coat of polish. The Sente’s smooth controls and modern hardware capture that same rush of adrenaline, that same satisfying precision, but with the comfort of reliability — no flickering CRTs, no sticky buttons, just pure gameplay. You can still feel the weight of every decision, the rhythm of each laser shot, and that familiar wave of panic when the aliens close in on your last human.

It’s easy to call the early ’80s the “Golden Age” of arcades, but Defender proves it was more than nostalgia — it was a time of bold experimentation and raw creativity. It was about standing shoulder to shoulder with friends, chasing that high score, and losing track of time in front of a glowing cabinet that dared you to be better.

More than forty years later, Defender still stands tall. It’s not just a classic — it’s a feeling. One that the Polycade Sente allows you to rediscover, one alien wave at a time.

Amazing Experience

The Sente has allowed me to relive wonderful arcade experiences of my younger days. The included games are major hits from decades ago, but are still a blast to play till this day. All of the games play perfectly on the Sente and are mapped to the same buttons that the original arcade units used, so you can just load up Street Fighter Championship Edition and start brawling and having fun as intended. The included games are well curated, and purposefully selected for enjoyment. The major appeal of the arcade games is that they are easy to pick up, yet challenging, and really fun to play; you can get in a quick session if desired, or play many the games simultaneously with a friend. The Sente allows you to really experience the games as they were designed and intended- in arcade fashion, which is way more authentic and fun than on a console. I chose to purchase a stand for my Sente, which I really like, as it gives the whole unit an appealing, full-sized arcade look, and allows me to easily transport and place the unit anywhere in my home. I am very happy with my Sente, and it is a delight to play!

Best Customer Service… Period.

I am so happy with my Polycade. But even more mind blowing was the customer service I received, specifically from Tyler. I know a lot of questions can be answered by reviewing the FAQ’s on the website, but I had detailed questions and always prefer speaking to someone. Tyler was patient, thorough, and extremely knowledgeable of the product and tech specifications. He offered solutions and options I didn’t even know about, and walked me through the process with ease. Again, I cannot overstate how patient and awesome he was to work with on this. You hear that Polycade staff!?! Tyler deserves an award or a raise or BOTH if this is how he deals with all customers that call in… which I imagine he does. That’s it!… I just wanted to take a moment to write a review to sing the praises of the best customer service I think I have ever received. Thank you Tyler! You’re single handedly the reason I pulled the trigger on buying a Sente after much deliberation. I will be recommending this system, from a solid company… to everyone I know!!!
