It was 1985. There were no cellphones, no endless videos to scroll. Just you, your mode of transportation, and a pocket full of change. Sega dropped Space Harrier into arcades—and the excitement of playing it was something to be had. The game was designed by the legendary Yu Suzuki and used Sega's new “Super Scaler” tech to create suede 3D before full-on 3D was even a practical thing. Enemies were intense, fast, and they charged toward you, while the ground stretched endlessly beneath your feet like some kind of neon vapor fever dream. And instead of piloting a spaceship, the most unique aspect was that you were a flying dude. Just… a guy. Flying, and... Shooting dragons, and androids. Totally normal.

The cabinet, like many of the highly regarded Sega 80's cabinets, was half the flex. The deluxe version of Space Harrier came with a motorized cockpit style seat that rocked and tilted as you played. An effect that gave you a “strap in and hope you don’t embarrass yourself in public,” vibe. It was one of the earliest examples of arcade immersion done right, long before VR headsets or motion rigs became buzzwords. Also, fun trivia: that iconic voice line—“Welcome to the Fantasy Zone. Get ready!”—was one of the first times voice synthesis became a defining part of a game’s identity. Yep, mid-80s synthesized voice overs were peaking.

Something often seems overlooked, was Sega's console ports at the time. When Space Harrier made its way to the Sega Master System, they created a separate version titled Space Harrier "3-D," using active shutter glasses (which you have to plug into a cart converter that attached to the console) to create actual stereoscopic 3D at home. It wasn’t perfect—think more “whoa, this is wild” than “crystal clear immersion”—but it proved they were serious about gaming innovation and pushing boundaries. I can remember being amazed as a kid, when I got to sample play Space Harrier 3-D, with the 3D glasses in a local Federated Store in Redlands, California.
In a time when most games were still figuring out how to side-scroll smoothly, Space Harrier reached and went for mind-bending experience… what a time to be alive.
