History & Fun Facts

The Real Ghostbusters (1987)

by Jayde SheLion on Jul 31, 2026
The Real Ghostbusters (1987)

When The Real Ghostbusters arrived in arcades in 1987, it gave fans of the hit animated television series (and film) a chance to step directly into the role of New York City's favorite paranormal exterminators. I can still remember playing with two others in a crowded arcade at a local amusement park "Fiesta Village," in San Bernardino, California. It was near A.P.B., and Blasteroids. Developed and published by Data East, the game transformed the cartoon's colorful cast and supernatural charm into a fast-paced side-overhead action experience. Players battled haunted mansions, rooftops, ghost-filled city streets, and eerie underground hideouts while blasting waves of ghosts with powerful proton packs. Unfortunately, arcades were still recovering from the gaming crash, and Ghostbusters never reached the legendary status of some arcade giants from the era, Regardless, it still has loyal fans thanks to its faithful presentation, cooperative gameplay, and unmistakable 1980s cartoon atmosphere.

One of the game's biggest attractions was its three-player cooperative mode, allowing friends to team up as different Ghostbusters to clear each stage together. Unlike many beat-'em-ups of the time, combat focused on ranged attacks rather than punches and kicks, with proton streams serving as each player's primary weapon. Throughout the adventure, players could collect power-ups that upgraded their proton packs, increasing their firepower against increasingly challenging supernatural enemies. The game's colorful sprite work, expressive monster designs, and energetic soundtrack captured much of the personality that made the animated series so popular with fans around the world. Then again, Data East was kind of the leader in film to arcade ports in the 1980's!

A few fun facts make The Real Ghostbusters even more interesting. While the arcade cabinet was based on the animated television series, its gameplay was actually inspired by Data East's earlier action titles, blending run-and-gun mechanics with light platforming elements. In North America, the game proudly carried The Real Ghostbusters license, but in Japan it was released simply as Meikyuu Hunter G because the rights to the Ghostbusters name were owned by another company. This unusual licensing situation resulted in different title screens depending on where the game was released, even though the gameplay remained largely the same. Today, original cabinets are relatively uncommon, making the game a fun discovery for collectors and arcade enthusiasts.

Looking back, The Real Ghostbusters remains a nostalgic snapshot of the late-1980s arcade scene, when licensed games often introduced players to entirely new adventures beyond what they had seen on television. While it may not receive the same recognition or remembrance as other co-op arcade classics, its combo of cartoon-inspired visuals, 3-player co-op gameplay, and unique ghost-hunting action continues to make it a favorite among retro gaming fans. Whether you're revisiting it for childhood memories or discovering it for the first time, The Real Ghostbusters is still a spirited reminder of why arcades were the perfect place for adventures!

Amazing Experience

The Sente has allowed me to relive wonderful arcade experiences of my younger days. The included games are major hits from decades ago, but are still a blast to play till this day. All of the games play perfectly on the Sente and are mapped to the same buttons that the original arcade units used, so you can just load up Street Fighter Championship Edition and start brawling and having fun as intended. The included games are well curated, and purposefully selected for enjoyment. The major appeal of the arcade games is that they are easy to pick up, yet challenging, and really fun to play; you can get in a quick session if desired, or play many the games simultaneously with a friend. The Sente allows you to really experience the games as they were designed and intended- in arcade fashion, which is way more authentic and fun than on a console. I chose to purchase a stand for my Sente, which I really like, as it gives the whole unit an appealing, full-sized arcade look, and allows me to easily transport and place the unit anywhere in my home. I am very happy with my Sente, and it is a delight to play!

Best Customer Service… Period.

I am so happy with my Polycade. But even more mind blowing was the customer service I received, specifically from Tyler. I know a lot of questions can be answered by reviewing the FAQ’s on the website, but I had detailed questions and always prefer speaking to someone. Tyler was patient, thorough, and extremely knowledgeable of the product and tech specifications. He offered solutions and options I didn’t even know about, and walked me through the process with ease. Again, I cannot overstate how patient and awesome he was to work with on this. You hear that Polycade staff!?! Tyler deserves an award or a raise or BOTH if this is how he deals with all customers that call in… which I imagine he does. That’s it!… I just wanted to take a moment to write a review to sing the praises of the best customer service I think I have ever received. Thank you Tyler! You’re single handedly the reason I pulled the trigger on buying a Sente after much deliberation. I will be recommending this system, from a solid company… to everyone I know!!!
